ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

PROLOGUE
Life is full of change. . .and as of November 15, 2010, the Wild Coast Photography Club (WCPC) was discontinued. This website now exists as a place for postings by the club’s former founder and operator – me – Jack Sheid. But, while I'm not interested in leading another photography club, I am interested in helping to start and run a photo club in Crescent City. Anyone with a simular interest should contact me. . .maybe we can make something happen.

CLUB HISTORY
An Overview
The WCPC existed for about 18 months, starting in June 2009, with weekly meeting in Brookings, Oregon and briefly in Crescent City, California. It came to be when I moved to Brooking and discovered there was no photography club within 100 miles. So. . .having been a member of photography clubs for many years, I took it upon myself to organize, fund, and operate the WCPC as a free service for anyone who wished to take part.
In Brookings, we met on alternating Wednesdays at the Checto Activity Center during the afternoon, and at the Manely Art Center during evenings. Each meeting place was a separate branch of the WCPC with its own activities and “favorite” photos voted for posting on this website. In Crescent City, we briefly met in the conference room of Edward Jones, on Wednesday afternoons.
The club was designed as a learning place for amateur photographers through an exchange of ideas and experiences from those attending club meeting. The ultimate goal was to establish a non-profit club with elected officers and become a permanent entity for the community. Sadly, sufficient support and funding for that goal never became available and changes in my personal life made it impossible for me to continue operating the club independently.
Accomplishments
Meetings: Over the course of the club’s existence, some 80 people appeared on WCPC attendance rosters. Some of those were “Rain Birds” who visited during Spring and Summer. Others attended periodically throughout the year and a “core” of about 20 people regularly attended club meetings.
People attending club meetings chose their own division as either a Novice or Advanced photographer. Some people initially had little idea of how to operate their cameras, while others were well versed in camera operation, photo composition, and even some photo-editing software techniques. Through regular meeting attendance, both groups were able to gain a more thorough understand of modern digital photography techniques. . .many of whom went on to win several prizes in juried photo exhibitions.
Photo Exhibitions: (All exhibitions listed were organized and run by the WCPC)
  • Brookings Public Library’s WCPC Show, March, 2010: WCPC attendees were awarded six ribbons by judge Carol Schach, of Crescent City, in Novice and Advanced divisions.
  • Dewey’s Digs’ (in Brookings) WCPC Show, May 2010, Chetco Activity Center’s WCPC branch: Six ribbons were awarded by judge Maureen Walker, of Pistol River, in Novice and Advanced divisions.
  • Dewey’s Digs’ (in Brookings) WCPC Show, June 2010, Manely Art Center’s WCPC branch: Six ribbons awarded by judge Horst Wolfe, of Brookings, in Novice and Advanced divisions.
  • Curry County Fair Photography Exhibition, July 2010: The WCPC made up 25% of the adults entering the photo exhibition, and won 52% of the ribbons awarded by judge Burl Noggle, of Coos Bay. The photo exhibition received glowing accolades from the judge and the Fair’s manager. This singular event clearly demonstrated the advantage of photographers participating in a photography club and made my head swell to an enormous size with pride in the WCPC’s people and its accomplishments.
Training Courses: Implemented two Photoshop Elements courses at Southwest Oregon Community College in Brookings.
